#8 Teaching Screenwriting: Perspectives on Education and Training
Let’s Talk Screenwriting!
24 April 2023, 11:00-12:00 CEST, online
The second panel of Let’s Talk Screenwriting in 2023 focuses on screenwriting education and training: How are today’s students being trained for writing for the screen (or rather: for different types of screens and platforms) in an ever-changing media landscape? How have ‘traditional’ forms of education responded to changes in the industry and which alternative, commercial forms of talent development or collaborations between media companies and educational institutions exist in countries such as The Netherlands, Germany, Australia, or the US? Which screenwriting pedagogies will help prepare young screenwriters for working in the contemporary media industries?
The online session will start with a presentation by two of the leading scholars in screenwriting research, Craig Batty (University of South Australia) and Stayci Taylor (RMIT University), who will present their research on teaching screenwriting through script development. They will discuss their insights and the potentials of this practice as well as other – established and innovative – approaches to ‘training talent’ with Timo Gößler (lecturer, writer, script consultant; Filmuniversität Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF Potsdam), Benjamin Harris (Netflix Grow Creative DACH, CEE, Nordics), Anne van Melick (Head of Screenwriting, Netherlands Film Academy), and the audience.
Chair: Hanna Surma.
